I have been asked to produce 5 images to be shown in an exhibition in the millennium Galleries, Sheffield based around the theme of Identity.
From this I have decided to take images based on the 1940's and how it is different to the modern day (I will be dong this by using both analogue and digital cameras). I would like to do this because it is relevant to me and I have a lot costumes/ clothing already and I have access to more vintage clothing if needed.
I will be varying between modern and traditional techniques of photography. This is to show the differences between photography of the past and in the present and how it has changed. I am also doing this to find out why analogue photography is still popular.
The genre of photography I will be taking is Social Reportage in the "Modern"/"Vintage" community. This is because I have Knowledge on this subject and it gives me freedom to be more spontaneous at times in my shots.
I will be using this subject to challenge the idea that people in the 'vintage subculture' are blind to the horrors of the past (specifically the 1940's in my case) and tend to wear rose tinted glasses when thinking about the past.
The techniques I will be using are:
1: I will have a variance in composition in my series of images. This is because It adds variance to the series of images as a whole and it makes the images more interesting to look at.
2: I will try and incorporate leading lines into my photography. This is because it helps to create depth and direct the viewer through the image.
3: I will try and use framing in some of my images. This is because it can add an interesting twist to the image and give a more authentically vintage feel.
4: I will incorporate the rule of thirds in my photography. This is because this will make my images more interesting for the audience and it will allow me to better plan my shots better.
5: I will be using monochrome or sepia in my photography. This is because It will give my photographs a more authentic look/ feel.
I will be using these photographic elements as guidance for all of my images at some point. I cannot be specific for each photograph as I will be doing spontaneous shoots.
The target audience for my exhibition will be people who visit Galleries (especially the Millennium Galleries) and are interested in both vintage and Modern Photography (and the combination of the two).
I have not sketched any of the photos i plan to take as this will be a spontaneous shoot.
Analogue Photography:
Kodak Instamatic 50 Camera- I will be using this camera because it is a simple click and shoot camera. Also it is from the 1960's (which is just out of my chosen era), But it takes high quality images.
Kodak (or other brand) 126 Film Cartridge- I will be using this because it is the film needed for this camera in order to take photos. I have been unable to take photographs with this camera so am unable to show evidence of my skills until the actual photographs are taken.
Digital Photography:
The digital camera I am using is Cannon 650D, because this is the camera that I am used to using and feel that I am most confident in using this camera. Also i have already taken tester shots using this camera and feel that this shows my skills as a photographer.
Costumes:
The costumes that I will be providing from my personal collection were made in the style of the 1930s/40s and will either be authentic (actually from that era) or made in the style of the era. This will be done to give the photograph a greater sense of verisimilitude.
I will be using volunteers at the 1940's cottages as models. This is because they are also interested in this era and I can have a wider age range of models to appeal to a wider audiences, as well as the target audience.
I will ask the models to dress in the style of the era. If this is not an option I will be providing costumes they can wear.
I will be using the following props; a Washtub, posher, dolly and washtub (in the wash-house). In the kitchen I will be using the kitchen table, food, cutlery, cups and plates. In the parlour/ living room I will be using the furniture, such as record player and chairs. I will also use a pianola in the parlour. This is because the props help give the setting/ photographs more verisimilitude.
Key milestones:
Planning will be finished for the February 15th.
Taking photographs will be taken between 21st February and 20th March.
Editing photographs will be finished for the 30th April.
The launch date of the Exhibition is 1st of May.
Health and safety:
Health and safety is very important when doing a photo-shoot because it ensures there is a minimal chance of accident occurring. This mainly applies to people working on the shoot ( myself and the models).

Legal and Ethical:
As I may end up taking photographs of children I will need to think about Child Protection and the laws surrounding this.
Child Protection is a law from the UN Convention used to protect children from harm and protect them from exploitation. Laws put in place for this is to avoid the use of the child's name next to their photography, gaining parental consent and to only use children in suitable dress.
If I do end up capturing photographing children I will have to seek written permission from the parent/ guardian of the child. I will also need to be sure to only take photographs of the child at the agreed place and event. Finally, I will not show the child's name and location next to any photograph taken.
As I will be taking and storing photographs of models I will have to think about the Data Protection Act.
Data Protection is a law that is created to protect the information given to a person/ company by not sharing or selling the information without given permission. This was also created to enable companies to collect information about customers / models. I will be sure to tell the models the use of the photographs, how long I will be storing the images and ensure that I get consent for the use of any photographs taken.
Copyright is a law that is created to protect a product (whether literature, music or images) from being stolen/ used without permission from the owner. I have shown consideration of this by avoiding using copyrighted material by taking my own photographs and avoiding using/ showing logos. I also will not use the images for profit.
Misrepresentation: When taking photographs for people I must only use the photographs as was consented. To avoid misrepresentation if wanting to use a photo for anything other than was originally specified, I would have to seek/ gain permission to use the photograph for the alternative use. A way that I would do this is through e-mail.
Contingency: If I cannot gain access to the manor cottages I will be taking photographs in the City Road cemetery next to the wartime memorial stone and at various scenic areas. Other contingencies for this idea is the if I cannot gain permissions for the models, I will just photograph the locations. As this is a public space it would be fine but I gained permissions just as a precaution. I would do the same if the models were not available for the shoot.
